What Happens During a Neurofeedback Session?

Oct 19, 2021

Introduction

If you or your child struggle with focus, attention, sleep or emotional regulation, Neurofeedback could help. Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive way to help train the brain to become more relaxed, calm, alert and focused. Here’s what to expect before, during, and after a Neurofeedback session.

Before Your Neurofeedback Session

Before you come in for your Neurofeedback session, there are some steps that you should take in order to get the most out of your training. Firstly, try your best to get a good night’s sleep before your session.

Good sleep will help you be more alert and focused the next day, which will help improve your training performance. Eating a nutritious meal and avoiding alcohol or substance use before your session can also help improve your performance. Finally, try to arrive at your session with freshly washed hair and little to no product in your hair if you can. Over time, dead skin cells and oils build on the scalp, which can affect the signal from the electrode cap. Clean hair will help us get a clean signal!

During Your Neurofeedback Session

When you come in for your Neurofeeback session, a trained Neurofeedback technician will place an electrode cap on your head, which will be used to record your brain activity while training. The cap used at Neuropotential Clinics has dry electrodes, which means that there is no sticky gel or messy set-up involved! The technician will spend some time adjusting the electrodes before starting. This process is pain-free; it should feel like brushing your hair with a wide-toothed comb. The technician will also record your mood, sleep, and anything else that may affect your training performance.

During training, you will watch a movie or television show of your choice while wearing the electrode cap. The electrodes will send information about your brainwave activity to the computer. If the computer software detects that you are in a calm, relaxed, and focused state, you will be rewarded with audio-visual feedback, which means that it will be easier to watch the movie! You can expect the media to fluctuate in sound and brightness throughout the session as your brain has to work harder to maintain focus.

After Your Neurofeedback Session

After training, the Neurofeedback technician will remove the cap and briefly discuss your performance during the session. Use this time to ask questions and update them about how you felt during the session. To ensure that the next session goes well, try your best to get good sleep, daily exercise, and practice self-care techniques to manage your stress!

We offer traditional Neurofeedback or single-channel training where one electrode is used to complete the brain training. We also offer more advanced forms of Neurofeedback training such as sLORETA z-score Neurofeedback training where 19 electrodes are used to train multiple areas of the brain. This is commonly used for more complex cases and has the advantage of dry-electrode technology.
